Information for Adults Living with Scoliosis
Many adolescent spinal deformities are overlooked or simply progress in early adulthood requiring treatment. These conditions that include Scoliosis, Kyphosis and Spondylolisthesis (forward slip of one vertebra over another due to a stress fracture) develop more extensive symptoms as an adult. Left untreated these conditions may result in severe pain, rigid deformity, impairment and often leg pain resulting from compressed nerves as the spine collapses.
Treatment Options for Adults
Treatment for these progressive adolescent deformities as an adult are not often optimal as the pediatric deformity surgeon may not see them due to their age and the adult spine surgeon is ill equipped to address these deformities. While there is overlap in treatment methods for adult and pediatric spinal deformities, there are many differences that need to be addressed in the adult in order to achieve optimal surgical results. Such differences include the ability to perform spinal surgery from the front of the spine to improve the often more rigid deformity in the adult as well as addressing compressed nerves that result in leg pain and weakness which is uncommon in the pediatric population.
Unlike other surgeons, Dr. Siambanes has specialty training and years of experience treating cases of both pediatric and adult deformity scoliosis. He has completed separate fellowship training in Pediatric Orthopedics and Adult Spine Reconstructive Surgery. Additionally, his expertise includes performing specialized techniques such as the use of scopes to access the spine through minimally invasive procedures.
